5 Tips For Buying Air Filters

3M Filtrete Air Filters[While we love these six pill-free allergy relief tips from Woman's Day, we can't help but feel that they missed one big and important tip - replace your used air filters!

In the post below, find five tips for ensuring you buy the right air filters to ensure your furnace or air conditioner fills your home with only the cleanest indoor air.]

There’s a very good reason that you see more promotions and better deals on air filters during the fall and spring.  Simply, many just don’t think to swap out their air filters until out-of-control allergies force their hand.

In that sense, we know this post is not in any way trendsetting.  We’ll just have to settle for helpful, instead.

As you find yourself in the biannual air filter buying cycle, keep these five tips in mind:

1. Now Is The Time To Buy & Stock Up
Those that sell air filters, including us, know that Fall and Spring are the times you need to buy.  In response, you are going to see some great deals encouraging you to stock-up.  Our advice? Do it.

While now is the time that changing air filters is on your mind, odds are good that you’ll need to replace your filter again before spring, when these deals crop up again.  At a minimum, we’d recommend buying at least two filters to get you to that next sale period.

2. Don’t Wait Longer Than Three Months
Typical lifespan of an air filter is three months.  Check out the image to the left, courtesy of the San Diego Real Estate Inspection Company, for a nasty one that’s clearly gone a bit longer. It’s possible that some filters may need to be replaced more frequently and it’s also possible that a filter could last a miraculously long time.  It depends heavily on the quality of air being passed through.Dirty Air Filter

Even if you don’t find yourself changing your air filter every ninety days, at a minimum, check the filter to ensure it is holding up.  There’s nothing worse than paying more than you should on HVAC maintenance because you went too long between swapping out a $20 – 40 air filter.

3. Better Prices & Deals Are Available Online
Nearly all the big box stores are in the air filters business.  While their prices may be competitive, they will rarely be able to approach the prices online stores like ours are able to offer.

If you are in the market for an air filter this month, we would encourage you to compare our prices on top brands – including 3M Filtrete – against the big box stores.  If you do find a better price, let us know (1-800-683-8353) and we’d be happy to offer a price match if you send the information our way.  Also keep in mind that all orders placed by 4pm CST typically will ship same day.

4. MERV Ratings, MPR Ratings & Thickness: Bigger Not Always Better
It should come as no surprise that at FridgeFilters.com, we pride ourselves on knowing a little bit about water filters.  As such, we oftentimes find ourselves talking customers out of more lucrative purchases, simply because the needs of the customer don’t warrant bigger systems.   With air filter MERV ratings, MPR Ratings and thickness, our advice is similar.

3M Filtrete 4 Inch Furnace Air FilterMERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is a score indicating how much dirt, dust and dander the filter captures.  MPR is a 3M term that stands for Microparticle Performance Rating.  Higher scores mean the filter captures more particles.  So why wouldn’t you want the highest ratings available?  The answer lies in your type of HVAC system’s ability to handle higher rated filters.  Higher rated and thicker filters will resist air flow in the process of blocking more particles, and if your HVAC can’t handle it, it could quickly fail.  There’s almost nothing worse than paying to repair, or to buy a new, HVAC system just because of an unnecessarily large filter.

Higher rated and thicker air filters – like the beast to the left – are designed for those with hard-core allergies or significant air quality issues (think heavy smoke and pet dander.)  Most will get by with an air filter with a MERV rating of 11 or lower.

The best thing you can do to determine what type of filter you need is to see what type of air filter is currently in your furnace – and buy the same model.  If you are still in doubt, we welcome you to call our customer service department (that number again, 1-800-683-8353) for help.

5. Air Filters Are Just As Important For Your Fridge
It’s amazing how much funkier dirty fridge air smells after you’ve gone through the effort to swap out your air filters and eliminate dust and dander throughout your house.

My Refrigerator Smells…How Do I Fix It?

My Refrigerator SmellsBread, cookies and bacon.

The smells and odors coming from your kitchen should be pleasant and comforting.

Rotten meat, stale garlic and fish.

If your refrigerator smells like any of the less than pleasant smelling foods above, you can bake all the cookies you want but your kitchen is still going to emit a rotten odor.  And when it comes to rotten refrigerator odor, there’s only so much one can take.

What’s ironic is that sometimes, the healthier food you cook, the more unpleasant smells can emit.  Food like broccoli, cauliflower and the aforementioned fish are staples of a healthy plate, but can generate such strong and unpleasant smells that you may find yourself retreating back into a world filled with nothing but cookies and bacon.  (Or bacon-wrapped cookies, but that’s a topic for another post.)

If your refrigerator smells, fortunately, it’s fairly easy to determine why.  Most times, in fact, it simply involves leftovers that have been allowed to go bad or food that has found a way to leak through its packaging.

All Natural Disinfectant Spray RecipeOnce you determine the type of and source of the smell, the next step is to arm yourself with the right refrigerator odor clean-up and removal products, some of which may be purchased and some of which can be made at home with all-natural ingredients.  A recipe for a fool-proof, all natural refrigerator odor eliminator and kitchen deodorizer can be found below or in the image to the left:

  • 1 cup water
  • 20 drops lavender
  • 20 drops thyme or eucalyptus oil
  • 10 drops tea tree oil

Mix all the ingredients above into a spray bottle, empty all the contents out of your refrigerator, and give it a thorough spray and wipe down – hitting every corner and beneath every drawer.  When restocking your refrigerator, it goes without saying, throw away anything that looks as though it may have turned.

Gonzo Refrigerator Odor EliminatorIf refrigerator smells persist, baking soda or Gonzo odor eliminator (proudly offered by FridgeFilters.com) can act like a hungry magnet that attracts and swallows odors whole.

Following the steps above once per week, or once every other week, can help ensure fridge food odors rarely become an issue.

If your refrigerator odor is not food related, there are some other potential issues you may be experiencing.  The first, of course, is a malfunctioning part or leak.  If the smell resembles ozone, smoke or burning – our recommendation is to call a local service provider as soon as possible.

If your refrigerator is emitting a rotten egg smell, you may be due for a water filter change, especially if you use well water, commonly chock full of iron and sulfur.  If your refrigerator water dispenser is emitting an eggy smell, a filter change – along with a quick clean-up of the dispenser and tray with a lemon / vinegar solution – should do the trick.

On the other hand, if your refrigerator water smells metallic or similar to chlorine, you are likely experiencing the same issue as described above, just swap out ‘well water’ for ‘city water.’  The same steps for eliminating the smell are recommended.
