5 Ways To Pre-Hydrate During The NFL Pre-Season

Pre-Hydrate During Pre-SeasonThis week and weekend finds us about half-way through the NFL pre-season, a time many fervently anticipate since the final downs of the previous season, and many more fervently anticipate ending – so we can get to the actual season, already.

Just as everyone from the players to the coaches to the vendors will use the pre-season to get their schemes and plans in line, you can use this time to ensure that you can more effectively stay hydrated all season long.

Here are five ways to pre-hydrate during the NFL pre-season:

1. Order & Change Your Fridge Filter
When the season finally kicks off, you don’t want to be stuck serving yourself less than perfect tasting drinking water from your fridge dispenser. Fortunately, as long as you place your fridge filter order from our store by 4pm CST any week-day, we’ll ship it out the same day. Time may be running out, but you still have time to get the replacement fridge filter you need before the season starts.

Don't Miss A Thing When NFL Season Starts2. Get A Good Water Bottle To Keep Close At Hand
Just because your fridge is serving clean tasting water doesn’t mean you want to get up and walk all the way to the kitchen to grab another drink! If you get up during the game, you could miss the greatest play ever, and if you get up during a commercial, you’ll miss out on time you could be spending seeing what other games are on. Our advice is to get a great water bottle, including those found here, to ensure you’ll always have clean drinking water close at hand when the game is on.

3. Invest Small In A Water Filter Pitcher
If your home will be full of people when it comes time for the season to officially kick-off, they’re going to get thirsty. Like you, chances are they’re not going to want to miss a thing. Rather than buying every guest their own filtered water bottle, make a small investment in a one of the filtered water filter pitchers from Brita or PUR found on our site. Many are even sleek enough looking to earn a spot at any table!

Stay Hydrated While Tailgating4. Fill Up The RV Water Tank
Maybe the one reason you bought that RV was so you’d have a tailgate ready vehicle for the upcoming season. If so, why ruin the maiden tailgating voyage of the season by serving dirty tasting water? Before tailgating truly begins, check out our selection of RV filters to make sure you have what you need to serve only clean water from your tailgate ready vehicle.

5. Install A Shower Filter
Hitting the showers isn’t just for the players. After all, watching the game, hosting parties or tailgating can all be tough work! When it’s time for you to hit the showers after the game this season, be sure you’re doing so beneath the cleanest water possible – free of virtually all chlorine, hydrogen sulfide and more – by ordering one of the shower filters available on our site.

5 Ways To Wise Up Your Water Usage During National Water Quality Month

Fix Leaky Faucet During National Water Quality MonthFor years, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized August as National Water Quality Month, a time for us all to think about both the positive and negative impact we have on this resource.

We love the occasion, for obvious reasons, but oftentimes can find ourselves overwhelmed with seemingly endless ideas for how we can make and encourage positive change. In fact, this post comes at the midway point of the month, as it took just that long to whittle down our original list of 1,000 to a more manageable list of the five items below.

With that, here are five ways you can more effectively use water during the back half of National Water Quality Month:

1. Find & Fix Even The Smallest Leaks
If there has ever been a home immune to leaks, drips, and drops – we have yet to see it. And while the leaks may be small, as little as one drip per minute, from one faucet per day, can waste away more than 100 gallons yearly. To see how quickly this can get out of hand when multiplied by multiple homes, faucets and drips – check out this calculator from the US Geological Survey (USGS.) If we all commit to fixing those tiny leaks in our individual homes, our world as a whole will be in much better shape.

Matt Lauer Takes Ice Bucket Challenge2. Order All The Replacement Air & Fridge Filters You’ll Need In One Fell Swoop
In September, the kids head back to school. October we spend winterizing our yard and home. November and December, of course, are a holiday blur. This makes August the perfect time to buy those air filters and fridge filters you’ll need to carry you through the balance of the year. Get it done now and you won’t need to think about reordering again until we hit 2015!

3. Nominate Someone Close For The Ice Bucket Challenge…With One Caveat
Will the ice bucket challenge ever stop? Probably. But certainly not by the end of National Water Quality Month. While gimmicky, this challenge – launched in support of the ALS Foundation – is also an example of a viral charitable campaign that has unequivocally worked. Through today, this challenge has raised more than $41 million for ALS research, with no signs of stopping. So while the getting’s good, nominate someone close to you, but include one caveat. In addition to accepting the challenge of being covered in freezing cold water, make the nominee share one hot tip for conserving an equal amount of water. A tip, like, fixing a leaky faucet.

Downton Abbey Promotional Shot With Errant Water Bottle4. Keep A Water Bottle Close By…No Matter What…
Whatever you do this month, whether it’s enjoying the final few summer nights, heading out for that one final summer road trip, or even taking promotional photos for that British costume drama from the early 1900s that you’re starring in, always have that bottle of water close-by.

5…But Always Strive For The Most Eco-Friendly Option
We love both pictures of the Downton Abbey cast, including the oopsies with the water bottle to the left and the self-deprecating version below where the cast had a bit of fun while driving awareness for WaterAid UK. But if we could offer just one suggestion, it would be to replace those plastic water bottles with more eco-friendly versions, including those found at our online store.Stars of Downton Abbey Pose With Water Bottles For WaterAid UK  Not only will eco-friendly water bottles pay for themselves almost instantly, they’ll help to reduce the risk of spent plastic bottles winding up in oceans and landfills!

What ideas do you have for wising up water usage during the back half of National Water Quality Month? I invite you to share via a comment below.

Is There Chloramine In My Fridge Water?

Does Fridge Water Contain Chloramine?Earlier this year, Los Angeles began replacing the chlorine it had used for decades to disinfect its drinking water with chloramine. The reasoning behind the change is two-fold: first, chloramine is more effective as a disinfectant over longer distances; second, chloramine is less likely to be the culprit behind the creation of potentially harmful Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs.)

While its use is becoming more of a discussion point, chloramine, a combination of chlorine and ammonia, has actually been in use throughout several municipalities for decades. If you live in Denver, in fact, chloramine has been used to disinfect your drinking water since 1917.

That said, when more cities and municipalities begin changing how they disinfect their water – especially one of the largest municipalities such as Los Angeles – questions inevitably arise. For our customers, the question typically relates to whether or not chloramine is in their fridge water, or if chloramine is the cause of a funny taste or odor.

For our customers and readers alike, see answers to some of the more common chloramine questions our FridgeFilters.com team receives:

Will My Fridge Filter Reduce Chloramine?
The most popular fridge filters used by our customers make up a significant percentage of those used by hundreds of refrigerator models in use today. In no particular order, these filters are the Maytag UKF8001, the Whirlpool 4396710, 4396841 and 4396508, and the Frigidaire WF2CB.

All of the filters above help to significantly improve the taste and quality of water served by your fridge by reducing everything from chlorine odor to lead. But neither are able to state that they effectively reduce chloramine. The reason has to do with surface area. The unique make-up of chloramine that allows it to retain greater disinfection power over time and distance also make it remarkably difficult to filter with a standard carbon or charcoal filter that offers a rather small amount of filtration surface area.

Is There Chloramine In My Water, And If So, Is It An Issue?
The answer as to whether or not chloramine is used as a disinfectant in your city’s drinking water is a definite ‘maybe.’ If your municipality makes the switch, it is required to ensure that you are informed. If your city has long used chloramine, information will be found on its website or by calling a representative.

Whether or not chloramine is causing an issue comes down primarily to aesthetics. Much like chlorine, chloramine will cause an unpleasant taste and odor, similar to a swimming pool. But at safe levels (ie below the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 4 milligrams per liter, per the EPA) any negative health effects are extremely unlikely. Those that do need to be wary of chloramine, such as kidney dialysis patients or keepers of aquatic pets, will face the same health issues as they would with widely used chlorine.

Aqua-Pure AP5500RM Reverse Osmosis MembraneMy Water Has Chloramine In It & I Can’t Stand The Taste. What Do I Do?
Our first recommendation is to ensure that what you are tasting is chloramine and not chlorine. The reason is that chlorine is rather simple and affordable to reduce. Filters needed to reduce chloramine are typically far more expensive.

At FridgeFilters.com, some of the products we offer that can be of help include our selection of reverse osmosis filters and some of our whole house system housings, when loaded with the right type of filter.

Reverse osmosis filtration products, found here and pictured above, help reduce chloramines through the use of multiple carbon filters that pass water more slowly than other types of systems.  This allows for far greater impurity reduction. On our site, we offer several types of reverse osmosis membranes and filter sets that fit into systems from Aqua-Pure to GE.

A select number of our whole house filtration system housings, including the affordable Culligan HD-950, can help to ensure your water is virtually free of chloramine if loaded with a filter with more surface area (oftentimes, you’ll see these filters listed as ‘catalytic.’)

If you are considering a reverse osmosis or whole house system to reduce chloramine, our customer service team can help ensure you find the right system, filter or housing for your needs. You are invited to call with any questions at 1-800-683-8353. You may also call our team if you have any additional questions on how to reduce chloramine or any other impurity or contaminant from the water served by your fridge or by any other tap in your home.

Replace Your Fridge Filters Today, Get Ready For Back To School Season Tomorrow

Back To School Season - Coming SoonAt FridgeFilters.com, historically, August and September have been slower months. The reason? Per numerous comments from our customers over the years, when it’s time to send the kids back to school, a lot of other necessary errands simply get pushed to the side. One of these errands just happens to be replacing fridge filters.

At issue with this is more than just dealing with less-than-perfect water quality for a few extra weeks (although, why deal with this if you don’t have to?) But rather, the risk is that this period of a few extra weeks can quickly become a few extra months, as the end of back to school season runs smack dab into the middle of a whole host of business, including:

Remembering to revisit one errand that you’ve put off is easy enough, but trying to lump that one errand into an already overflowing schedule is something else entirely.

Today’s post is for those of you due to replace your fridge filter anytime between now and October. Rather than struggling to remember this critical errand while in the middle of back to school season, or forcing this errand out into an already busy autumn, let’s get it taken care of today.

In fact, we’ll even help you justify this earlier than needed purchase by offering you 10% off between now and next Monday, July 28th. Simply use the code ‘Back2School’ at check-out when buying online. You may also share this code with one of our customer service reps when buying over the phone at 800-683-8353.

Stay Hydrated For These Late Summer Happenings

Summer Dehydration DoldrumsIt’s that time of year.

We look forward to the fall, while summer temperatures continue to increase.

Every last trip we plan, whether to the beach or the deep into the Great Outdoors, may just be the last of the year.

And while we may be thirsty, the seasonal doldrums make it more difficult to focus on what we need to do in order to stay hydrated.

If we’ve made it past Independence Day, but are still too far away to consider ourselves in the ‘dog days,’ it’s safe to say that many of us may find ourselves in the summer doldrums.

While this is a great time of year to give ourselves an excuse to be a little lazy, we never want this peaceful malaise to get in the way of all-important hydration.

After all, we still have a lot to look forward to, including:

2014 All Star Game1. MLB All-Star Game – the one All-Star Game in all four major professional sports that matters, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be played tonight (July 15th) in our home base of Minneapolis, MN.

Whether you plan to attend the game in person, or watch it from the comfort of your clean air-conditioned home, drinking enough water throughout the day will ensure you can stay awake through the inevitable late end without feeling like a zombie the next day.

2. That Last Camping Trip of the Season – that last camping trip of the season is a great time to create memories that will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, it’s also a great time for Mother Nature to create harmful algae blooms in major waterways found around campsites, including the Great Lakes.

Algae bloom or no algae bloom, you can never be sure what type of water quality conditions or shortages you may run into when leaving the comfort of your home. To ensure you stay hydrated in even the most unexpected and inhospitable outdoors conditions, we would highly recommend browsing our selection of camping or RV filters, prior to your trip.

Stay Hydrated For Football Practice3. Football Camp – in late summer, football players at nearly every level – from high school to pro – will have reported to their respective camps. A sport more suited to be played in brisker fall temperatures, there have been far too many unfortunate and tragic incidents related to dehydration of players simply not accustomed to the summer conditions. (Our own Korey Stringer comes immediately to mind.)

If you are reporting to camp, or know someone that is, remember to always have or insist upon having a source of hydration close by. We can even help with our robust selection of eco-friendly water bottles, found here.

4. Month Three of Dry Air Conditioned Air – this time of year, it can be difficult to stay hydrated, even if you forgo those last outings in favor of the Great Indoors. The reason why is that air conditioned air can be very dry, despite being quite comfortable temperature-wise. If you prefer to be a homebody this time of the summer, be sure that you have what you need on hand – from water bottles to those replacement fridge filters you need – to help you stay hydrated in the face of dry indoor air.

Stay Hydrated When You Go Back To School5. Back to School! – while the official calendar may still say it’s summertime, the school calendar says it’s time to come back. Whether you are a parent breathing a sigh of relief, or a student getting prepped, remember that one of the keys to staying smart is to stay hydrated. But don’t just take our slightly biased word for it.  Dr. Philippa Norman shares how hydration is key to brain health on her site, here.

To help ensure your whole family is able to stay hydrated during back to school season, check out our selection of water bottles (linked here, once again) – or simply ensure that all filters in your home are ready to handle back to school hydration duties by finding the entire range of filters you need at our online store.

What else do you do to ensure you stay hydrated in late summer, and just as importantly, what late summer events do you ensure you stay hydrated for? I invite you to share, via a comment below.

Is Your Fridge Filter Ready For Father’s Day?

Dad Has The Clean Water He NeedsTypically, whether your fridge filter is used with well water or city water, replacement guidelines will instruct you to change it every six months. But as we have noted previously, water usage is a big factor that can influence your filter’s lifespan.

As we move deeper into summer, it’s likely that your water and ice usage has increased significantly, as graduation parties, get-togethers and socials have taxed the fridge filter you trust to keep your drinking water clean and your ice clear.

Which brings us to where we are now. Late summer, after several events have come and gone, we are rapidly approaching a holiday that receives far too little attention: Father’s Day.

Notoriously difficult to shop for, most dads leave very few clues as to just what the perfect Father’s Day gift really is (side note: if we had to guess, we’d probably start by looking here.) While we can only venture a guess as to the perfect gift for your dad, we’d feel far more safe in making the assumption that dad just wants everything in the home to work properly on his big day. In other words, the minor annoyances and embarrassments should be held for one of the year’s other 364 days.

This is where fridge filters comes into play. On dad’s big day, the last thing you want marring it is the extremely avoidable issue of drinking water that tastes chlorinated, metallic or gritty. This goes double if dad expects company and triple if this water and ice will be served up in coffee and cocktails.

Today is Tuesday, July 10th – T-minus 5-days from Father’s Day. Our site offers nearly every fridge filter your refrigerator model could possibly need, including our own affordably priced private brand designed for all major manufacturers. We can even get you the filters you need by the end of this week, courtesy of our expedited shipping options.

If your fridge filter is just on the brink of replacement, we encourage you to browse the selection available on our site, using the filter finder found on our home page.

As we race towards a holiday that deserves more attention, celebrating the man that wants little more than some peace and quiet, good food, friends and drinks, ensure you’ve got the clean water on hand that you need to make this ultimate wish come true.

If you need help finding the right fridge filter for your needs, please feel free to call our customer service team at 800-683-8353.

How Often Should I Replace My Fridge Filter If I Use Well Water?

Modern Kitchen Using Well WaterWhether you order a fridge filter from Maytag, Whirlpool, GE or Tier1, you will undoubtedly see some note on the filter box or packaging instructing you to replace it once about every six months.

Of course, the six months is just a guideline that can be adjusted based on your ‘water quality and usage.’

Water usage is fairly easy to wrap your head around.  If you have a larger family or household, you’ll use more water, which will naturally decrease the lifespan of your fridge filter.  Water quality, on the other hand is a bit more complex of a variable.  Especially for well water users.

Well Water Users Face Uniquely Personal Challenges With Sediment & Water Quality

Maytag UKF8001 Refrigerator Water Filter
Fridge filters, like the Maytag UKF8001 are primarily designed to reduce contaminants that impact taste and odor, and can become clogged with heavy sediment common in well water

Unlike their counterparts that use municipal or city water, well water users typically experience far more issues with sediment, ranging from dirt, to sand, to silt.

Carbon filters, which all fridge filters are, help to reduce taste and odor issues – primarily from chlorine – which is typically not an issue with well water.

Further, these filters can actually clog quite easily when filtering different types of sediment, leading to everything from gritty water to slow pouring.

To answer the question posed above, your fridge filter may only effectively perform for half of its life expectancy if you are a well water user, think three months, instead of six.

This is simply an educated guess, though, as water quality issues will vary from well to well.   But the bottom-line is that as a well water user, you can expect to go through about twice as many fridge filters – and pay twice as much – as those that live in the city and use a municipal water supply.  Unless, of course,  you implement some type of complementary solution.

Extend The Life Of Your Fridge Filter By Ensuring Sediment Never Gets To It

Culligan HD-950 Whole House Water Filtration System
Culligan HD-950 Whole House Water Filter

Fortunately, our online store offers solutions that can help to extend the life of your fridge filter and improve your water quality by ensuring sediment never makes it further than your water line.

Your first option would be to purchase and install a whole house water filtration system, including the three Culligan models we offer.  These systems connect easily to your water line, and once in place, will capture greater than 90% of virtually all types of sediment. Installation of a whole house system does more than just extend the life of your fridge filter.  Once installed, this system will help to improve the quality of your drinking water – from every tap – while also helping to reduce the risk of sediment corrosion inside your appliances.

Better yet, each of our whole house water filtration product pages include detailed instructions, ensuring that you don’t have to be MacGyver to get them properly installed.

Omnipure Q5505 Inline Water Filter
Omnipure Q5505 Inline Water Filter

Another option would be to install an inline sediment filter.  These filters will attach directly to your water line and can be installed outside your fridge, ahead of its carbon filter.  This is a more surgical option for water filtration, and depending upon the inline filter you choose, can also be more affordable than the whole house filters presented above.

If you go with this route for sediment reduction, please note that not all inline water filters are created equal, meaning not all will reduce sediment.  A few inline water filters we can direct you to if you are looking to reduce sediment include the Aqua-Pure AP717, the OmniFilter R200 and the Omnipure Q5505 (pictured.)

Avocados: To Fridge or Not to Fridge?

Avocados - To Fridge or Not To FridgeWe’re not ones to judge, but if you don’t love avocados, we may need to start wondering about you.

But whether you are an avocado addict or a guacamole junkie, you may not always be clear on when an avocado should be refrigerated and when it should be left out to survive on its own.

For all those too embarrassed to ask, here are two quick checklists sharing when you should – and when you shouldn’t – refrigerate avocado:

Put Your Avocado In The Fridge When:

Your avocado is fully ripened
Just give it a bit of a squeeze. If it feels just soft enough, without feeling gross and squishy, it’s done. Toss it in the fridge.  If not…

You need to halt the ripening process
That ripening process won’t stop.   Leaving a ripe avocado on your counter to survive on its own will cause it to ripen to that aforementioned gross and squishy state.

You plan to eat it within a week
Once in the fridge, that avocado will stay in the perfect ripened state for about a week – a little more if you’re lucky.  Put it in the fridge and start the countdown!

Alton Brown Guacamole RecipeYou’ve transformed it into Guacamole
While avocado is the main ingredient, there is much, much more in the perfect guacamole (like in Alton Brown’s recipe to the left.)  Not only does guacamole taste better cool, but some of those ingredients – including cilantro and sliced tomatoes – are better off kept at colder temperatures.

Leave Your Avocado Out of the Fridge When:

Your avocado is nowhere close to ripe
An avocado will begin to ripen the second it’s picked.  But there is often a short distance of time between picking and when you buy and bring it home.  When you bring that avocado home, and it still feels rock hard, leave it out.

Your avocado still feels rock hard to the touch – even if it SHOULD be ripe
On the other hand, what if you’ve had that avocado for over a week and it’s STILL rock hard?  You may want to cut it open and see what what’s happening before letting it take up fridge space – and certainly before you count on it to be featured in your next dip.

You will eat your avocado within the next 1 – 2 days
Leaving your avocado out means it will continue to ripen.  If you won’t eat it for a week – by all means – fridge it.  But if you’ll use it in the next one or two days, take a chance, and let it get up to the tip-top of that ripeness tipping point.

You’ve cut it – but PROMISE to eat it within a few hours
To clarify, the best and really only way to preserve an avocado after it’s been cut into is to involve refrigeration.  But if you promise to eat it within a few hours, you can use any number of tricks – from submerging it in cold water to sprinkling it with lemon juice – that will preserve it at close to room temperature and in that glorious ripe zone you’ve supported – for just long enough.  Just reconsider this plan if it starts to go brown.

What tips or tricks – or better yet, recipes – do you have involving avocado?  We encourage you to share your thoughts below.
