Common Herbicide “Atrazine” Found in Municipal Water Sources

Herbicides and other chemicals often manage to slip into our water supply, but at low levels these chemicals are not really dangerous. A report by the Natural Resources Defense Council, however, claims that frequent spikes in atrazine found in many agricultural regions raises it above safe levels for drinking. These spikes in the level of atrazine and other herbicides often occur after it rains and the chemical seeps into the ground water.

A water filter can reduce the amount of atrazine and other chemicals to a safe drinking level. The following list of water filters have been tested and reduce atrazine levels.

Whirlpool 4396710, Whirlpool 4396510, and Whirlpool 4396701
Maytag UKF 8001
Brita FRRF-100, Brita GERF-100, Brita MYRF-100, and Brita WPRF-100
Frigidaire WFCB and Frigidaire WF2CB
GE MWF and GE MSWF
LG LT 600P

  1. Atrazine has received a lot of press lately and more consumers are finally becoming aware of the dangers of it in their drinking water.
The state of Indiana released a statement just this week, encouraging consumers to use “point of use” drinking water filtration systems to protect themselves. Unfortunately, not all filters remove atrazine unless they’re certified by NSF to prove it!
I’m happy to say that the Multi-Pure drinking water systems DO remove atrazine, along with about 63 other harmful contaminants! Our filters cost less than bottled water and are certified by NSF to reduce the widest range of contaminants in the industry!
If you’d like to know more, I’d be happy to talk to you about our products. We can wait for the government to do its part or we can solve the problem ourselves!

  2. While I do not doubt that those systems work well, I am a little concerned by the high price tag. The Whirlpool filters, Maytag UKF 8001, Brita filters, and Frigidaire filters are all NSF tested and certified to remove atrazine and are available for under $40. These replacement cartridges can be used in a variety of refrigerators to filter out contaminants for your ice and water dispenser.
If you prefer to use a “point of use” drinking water system there are cheaper options there as well. The Culligan US-EZ-3 under sink filtration system removes 94.1% of atrazine and is available for $57.99 and comes with everything needed for installation. Replacement cartridges are also available for the US-EZ-3 system for only $34.99.

  3. Wow. I did not know that so many chemicals are still in our drinking water. We should all look into a water filter.
